Unmasking the Parisian Phantom of the Opera

What if I told you there is a lake under the Paris Opera House, just like in The Phantom of the Opera?

Down, down, down, deep underneath the Garnier Opera in a dingy room with a square-shaped hole in the middle, I found it. Resting in the hole was a ladder that seemed to be descending into nowhere. “What’s this?” I asked. “That,” answered my guide with a twinkle in her eye, “is the lake.”

As in THE lake from the The Phantom of the Opera?

I didn’t know it when my tour started, but the famous fable was set right where I was standing. As we glided through the sprawling staircases and hidden doors in my favorite Parisian monument of all time, it became clear that the phantom was much more than a fairytale…

"My life in Russia" is a video blog about English-speaking expats living in Russia. This is Jaime’s third visit to Russia and he hopes he’ll have the chance to come back here again. During his time in Russia, Jaime has managed to see more than just Moscow and Saint Petersburg. He’s also managed to travel to several Siberian cities by train.

Russia Beyond the Headlines? They are basically nothing but a piece of ... paid propaganda since expats are not in a hurry to move to Russia. This particular episode features a young Latin American guy who has a very thick accent in English. Actually, he is from Colombia. Sure, Russia looks good to him. I bet every country other than Colombia and (just a wild guess) Afghanistan look good to him. "Seliger" is a clue.

They should have done the interview with someone from Yemen or, better yet, Zimbabwe. He would think he died and went to heaven. On the second thought, probably not because of rampant racism.

The Queen made a rare intervention on the political stage when she expressed the hope that voters will "think very carefully about the future" before the Scottish independence referendum on Thursday.

As David Cameron prepares to issue a warning in Scotland that a vote for independence will lead to a permanent split from the UK, campaigners for the union welcomed the Queen's remarks as a reminder of the monumental decision facing voters in Scotland.

The comments by the Queen came as she left Crathie Kirk near her Balmoral estate in Aberdeenshire after the Sunday morning service. The Queen told a well-wisher: "Well, I hope people will think very carefully about the future."

The Queen's remarks were interpreted by no campaigners as helpful to their cause. They were seen to tally with a warning the prime minister will deliver in Scotland on Monday, on his final visit north of the border before Thursday's vote, that a vote for independence would lead to an irrevocable break with the UK.

The prime minister will say: "This is a once-and-for-all decision. If Scotland votes yes, the UK will split, and we will go our separate ways for ever."

...The remarks by the Queen came after the palace insisted last week that the monarch, who spends every summer at her Balmoral estate and whose mother was Scottish, was remaining above the fray in the referendum. This followed reports that the Queen was horrified by the prospect that her kingdom may be broken up.

что The world of joint - Мир "вывихнулся" или, проще, "свихнулся".

Russia Beyond Headlines is nothing but a piece of propaganda. Arguments supporting my viewpoint:

1. Russia Beyond the Headlines (RBTH) is a multilingual news and information resource that offers news, comment, opinion and analysis on culture, politics, business, science, and public life in Russia. The resource is sponsored by the Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the Russian government’s official newspaper

Source: Wikipedia

2. RBTH pays newspapers to include its supplements, part of a wider effort by the Russian government to exert soft power that includes heavy investment in international television network Russia Today. At the earliest stage of the project in 2007 Slate magazine criticized RBTH for its poor writing style and political agenda, saying "beneath the shattered syntax of these laughable pieces beats the bloody red heart of the tone-deaf Soviet propagandist."

3. Russia Beyond the Headlines is yet to publish at least one interview of those expats who view Russia in a negative light. It appears that all the people they interview for this particular segment are carefully chosen (thus censored).

I hope I fulfilled your requirements by providing some valid arguments.

1. Even if a website is supported by a newspaper, it does not make it a source of propaganda.

2. Slate magazine's opinion is not a fact. Style does not make a website a source of propaganda.

3. A website is not obliged to publish negative opinions about anything and it has a right not to do so.

4. MOST IMPORTANTLY: www.englishteachers.ru is a website for teachers and it is dedicated to improvement of teaching methods, and not to flooding and giving vent to opinions passed for "facts". Therefore you are banned from this forum for breaking its rules. Good luck with your own propaganda elsewhere.

Inedible dinners, poor hygiene and drunks – a foreigner’s view of England

A Portuguese professor based in London gives a dismal portrayal of the English in his bestseller Bifes Mal Passados (Undercooked Beef). It’s not the first unflattering portrait of the nation to be penned by foreigners

...

Outraged headlines greeted Paul Theroux’s The Kingdom By The Sea (1983), in which the American author toured the British coastline, finding Scots mean and boarding-house beds hard as boards but causing most offence by suggesting that Brits were self-deludedly “holding on” to past glories. Another American travel writer touring the UK, Bill Bryson in Notes from a Small Island (1995), got a lot of jokes from road signs (“place names like Farleigh Wallop, Titsey and Shellow Bowells”) and the existence of a major Radio 4 series in which people ask whether it’s time to plant their begonias.

Theroux and Bryson also dissed the rancid cuisine, a common theme in these books.

The American journalist Sarah Lyall, in A Field Guide to the English (2009) marvels that her English husband likes “puddings consisting largely of stale white bread”, while also complaining that brutal British loo-paper makes the consequences of eating harder.

он же "The Mayflower".

David Cameron says Queen ‘purred down line’ after Scotland no vote

Sky News catches prime minister on camera appearing to breach convention of never revealing conversations with monarch

David Cameron has been caught on camera talking about how the Queen “purred down the line” after he phoned her to say Scotland had voted no to independence.

The prime minister’s remarks suggesting the Queen was pleased with the result are a rare, albeit accidental, breach of the convention that the prime minister never speaks about his conversations with the monarch. It also jeopardises her traditional neutrality, which she maintained throughout the referendum campaign except when she was overheard telling a member of the public that she hoped people in Scotland would think carefully about the future.

Cameron’s exchange with Michael Bloomberg, the former New York mayor, was accidentally picked up by Sky News as they walked through an office in the businessman’s media empire.

“The definition of relief is being the prime minister of the United Kingdom and ringing the Queen and saying: ‘It’s alright, it’s OK’. That was something. She purred down the line.”

http://www.theguardian.com/politics/2014/sep/23/david-cameron-queen-purred-down-line-scotland-no-vote

The man is a self promoting arrogant gobshite. I'm no fan of the monarchy but old Queenie must wonder what she has done to have him on the end of the line. It must be like having an oily double glazing salesman calling you up.

.....

Yes! To think that she started off with Churchill, took tea with MacMillan and Wilson, and now has to cope with Blair and Cameron.

It's like a study of the UK's decline.

....

With all those corgis around, it's impossible the Queen purred. Impossible!

...
