"a few streets away, around 300 demonstrators had a different message. Mostly young, T-shirt clad and some facially studded, but with a scattering of older folk, they had gathered outside an Irish pub to bellow, toot and whistle the message that the monarchy should get out of Canada.

Blue and white fleur-de-lys Quebec flags were waved, as was the green, white and red standard of the failed insurrection of 1837. Their handmade banners told the story: "Parasite go home" said one, "And don't come back" added another. "Pay for your trip" said a third. "William dégage" was the message. Even more bluntly and in English: "Kate go UK yourself". And one for students of Britain's victory over France in the seven years war: "We are still waiting for your excuses for 1755.""

...""We have no bad feelings about the British empire," explained Julien Gaudreau, 23-year-old spokesman for the Quebec Resistance Movement. "We want to change the constitution here, not because of what happened in the past, but what will happen in the future. We have hired a plane to fly overhead with a banner for free Quebec, but we don't know whether it is going to be able to take off with the weather around.

"We think the monarchy should be abolished in Quebec. It may not be a good time for independence, but we are all right with that. We are young and we are going to be about for a long time. Independence is not going to go away."

Polls indicate that a majority of francophone residents support the idea of independence, but don't see its practicality, and the separatist Bloc Québécois was thrashed in May's federal election, losing all but four of its 47 seats.

Up the hill, the prince was trying out his schoolboy French – "C'est un honneur pour nous d'être parmi vous … merci votre patience avec mon accent" – and was cheered for doing so. Overhead, the plane and its banner finally made an appearance – a $1,000 gesture it looked as though the demonstrators could ill afford.

There was also a demonstration at the couple's earlier engagement in Montreal on Saturday evening when a group of young protesters with placards gathered outside the Sainte-Justine university hospital next to a larger crowd of wellwishers." http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2011/jul/03/prince-william-canada-protest-quebec

"Dr Janette Martin, of the University of Huddersfield's Centre for Oral History Research and The Arms and Armour Research Group, has recently completed a research project into the evolution of the role of Yeoman Warder of the Tower of London and an analysis of their place in the British identity.

Martin explains that, rather than being lauded as a national asset, for many years the Tower guards were infamous as a shocking bunch of scoundrels in urgent need of reform. Extortion was common, with hapless sightseers their usual prey.

As far back as 1598, she discovered, Sir John Peyton, Lieutenant of the Tower, complained that many warders were "unfitt for the place; some of them utterly neglectinge their duties in service, others given to drunckeness, disorders and quarrells".

It seems, says Martin, that the dissolution continued apace.

"John Bayley claimed in his History of the Tower of London that the warders were a disgrace," she says.

"Rather than guarding the Tower, he wrote, 'they have gradually assumed to themselves the more lucrative occupation of stopping every body who wishes to visit these objects of our national pride and glory and forcing themselves upon them as their guides...'"

Fortunately for today's tourists, once the Duke of Wellington stepped in as the Tower's new Constable in 1826, he whipped the warders into shape pretty smartish. This involved sacking the worst incumbents and abolishing the practice of Beefeaters selling on their position to anyone who had a spare 250 guineas.

The role is now restricted to those who can boast 22 years of military service, have reached at least the position of Warrant Officer and been awarded a good conduct medal. The post is salaried, and today's Beefeaters – the origin of the name is uncertain – are employed by the independent charity Historic Royal Palaces.

Though Martin doubts that democratising the role was at the forefront of Wellington's mind, the effect of his reforms, she says, resulted in "anyone, however low their origins, through long and exemplary service in the army, being able to obtain this prized position at the historic heart of the nation. And this transparency of appointment allowed the warder to become a popular symbol transcending class and region, because the British army attracted recruits from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales and Yeoman Warders were thus drawn from all parts of the kingdom.""

Just last week, another dispiriting poll was released revealing how little some of us know about our national history. Only 58% of Americans can say with certainty what happened on July 4, 1776 — a figure that falls to a jaw-dropping 31% in the under-30 cohort. Fully 25% of Americans who do know that we seceded from some country or another to become a nation don't know what that former parent country was. This follows on the heels of other polls showing similar numbers of folks believing that we fought the Russians in World War II and beat them with the help of our stalwart German allies.

MISS LORENS.
