Английская королева помечала сколько орешков оставалось в чашках, выставленных в ее комнатах, чтобы охрана не съела их, как стало известно Гардиан. Когда она увидела, что орехи ест кто-то еще, полицейским было направлено письменное предупреждение:

http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2013/dec/13/queen-scolded-police-for-eating-nuts

"The Queen was concerned that police were eating all the nibbles left out for guests before the wedding of Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles, it has been claimed at the phone-hacking trial.

The monarch's apparent unhappiness emerged in an email that was read out in court from the News of the World's then royal editor, Clive Goodman, to his editor, Andy Coulson, which began: "Queen furious about police stealing bowls of nuts and nibbles left out for her in the BP/Queen's corridor. She has a very savoury tooth and staff leave out cashews, Bombay Mix almonds etc."

The Queen evidently had turned detective to catch the police. "She started marking the bowls to see when the levels dipped," the email continued.

"Probl is that police on patrol eat the lot … Memo now gone around to all palace cops telling them to keep their sticky fingers out.""

Как в США работодатели шпионят за сотрудниками:

“American employees are more accustomed than their French counterparts to employer surveillance, be that regular screen-captures on work computers, email monitoring, credit checks, drug tests and even polygraph tests,” says Adam Levin, co-founder of online security company Identity Theft 911. In the U.S., for instance, criminal records — felonies, misdemeanors, infractions or arrest records — are all searchable through public records. And companies are not shy about finding them: 72% of 1,500 human resources executives say their company carried out criminal background checks on people before hiring them, according to a recent survey by consulting firm PeopleG2.

American employers also have more control over what gets sent and stored on company equipment, legal analysts say. The French Supreme Court, for example, recently ruled that companies are not permitted to access emails on company computers that are clearly labeled by employees as “personal” or “private.” Under French law, workers can use company equipment for reasonable personal use such as daily activities like arranging laundry or school activities for kids, says David L. Gregory, executive director of the Center for Labor and Employment Law at the St. John’s University School of Law in New York. “Workers in France are entitled to that kind of personal privacy,” he says. “In the U.S., that information sent over company equipment belongs to the employer.”

U.S. companies will hire private eyes to investigate staff suspected of submitting fraudulent disability or sickness claims or moonlighting against company policy, says Larry Cary, partner at the law firm Cary Kane in New York, who represents employees and unions. “I’ve had a bunch of cases where the employee has been fired and the arbitrator has upheld the dismissal based on evidence of a private investigator.” Two Long Island Railroad retirees were recently found guilty of faking disabilities, in a Manhattan federal court; one had earned a black belt in karate (lawyers for each have said they intend to appeal). The lesson: If you’re off on a neck or back injury, “don’t golf, water-ski or throw your grandkid up in the air,” says Bill Kowalski, a principal and director of operation at the Corporate Investigative Services division of financial services firm Rehmann in Troy, Mich. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/employer-spying-shrieks-in-france-shrugs-in-us-2013-12-17

И еще: "Some companies routinely check phone records of employees, monitor what websites they visit, and read emails and instant messages. All texts, emails and correspondence on a work phone or via social media are subject to surveillance by employers, experts say.

Private email and social networking are not immune either, although laws differ from state to state. Last year, Maryland became one of the first states to stop employers from accessing staffers’ Facebook accounts, after Maryland corrections officer Robert Collins approached the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland in 2010, disturbed that he was required to provide his Facebook login and password to the Maryland Division of Corrections during a recertification interview. At that time, the department had a policy to screen for gang affiliations. California introduced a similar privacy bill earlier this year.

...Whatever the reasons, monitoring of staff phone records and online activities is the norm, says Diane Rodgers, senior human resources operations manager at CBIZ Human Capital Service, a national accounting and professional services provider in St. Louis. And in many cases, the monitoring starts even before the employee’s first day: Some 37% of employers check an applicant’s Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn profile before hiring, a 2012 survey by jobs listing site Careerbuilder.com found. And there’s little need to hire security experts. “Most employers have their own internal IT resources,” she says, “and it doesn’t take a lot of outside expertise to search.”" http://www.marketwatch.com/story/whos-a-bigger-snoop-the-nsa-or-your-boss-2013-06-10

Страшная новость:

Digital editions of Mein Kampf have become a surprise hit online, according to author Chris Faraone, who has suggested that the newfound popularity of Adolf Hitler's tract is down to the fact that it can now be consumed "in the privacy of our own iPads".

Writing on the website Vocativ.com, author and journalist Faraone claims that "more than a dozen free English-language versions of Mein Kampf have been downloaded in excess of 100,000 times from the nonprofit Internet Archive alone", while paid-for e-versions are outselling Glenn Beck on iTunes and entering the charts on Amazon.com - with a 99-cent version currently topping the retailer's propaganda and political psychology chart .

In the UK, an ebook of Mein Kampf, retailing for 99p, tops Amazon.co.uk's propaganda and spin chart and its fascism and Nazism chart, and sits in second place in its political science and ideology bestseller list.

"ust as the devastating floods of recent weeks start to recede Arctic winds threaten to sweep in next week bringing ice, harsh frosts and wintry showers.

The mercury is expected to plunge below freezing across the UK with regions left sodden after the relentless rain now facing new misery.

Bitterly cold winds threaten to send temperatures plunging to -10C (14F) in the North while the South will shiver in lows of -4C (25F).

Forecasters warned that up to four inches of snow could fall over high ground in Derbyshire and Yorkshire. High pressure responsible for the cold snap could remain for weeks with the chill lasting until spring.

Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “People haven’t felt the cold so far as it has been mild so they should prepare for a shock to the system.

“It is going to get gradually colder from the weekend before taking a real plunge by the middle of next week. There is a significant threat of snow across the UK.

“There is still a battle going on between warm air from the West and a freezing mass from Siberia – which looks like winning out.”

In County Durham, a snow plough took to the roads yesterday to deal with a blanket of white deposited by wintry showers.

The Met Office warned it was set to turn colder overnight with temperatures hovering around freezing.

It issued a severe weather warning for ice in the South-east this morning as roads turn deadly."

18 Surprising And Odd Things You Never Knew About The English Language

- the Oxford English Corpus currently contains over 2 billion words

- The average person, though, is likely to know only about 50,000 of them.

- It is estimated that a new word is created every 98 minutes

- There are over 50 countries around the world that use English as an official language, including Ghana, Pakistan, and the Philippines.

- According to researchers at Reading University, the oldest known word in English is “who,” dating back more than 20,000 years.

- Author Ernest Vincent Wright once wrote an entire novel - just over 50,000 words - without using the letter “e.” AT ALL.
