Readers of The Guardian discuss who was the best Sherlock Holmes in films ever: http://www.theguardian.com/books/gallery/2014/apr/17/sherlock-holmes-test-of-time-detective-tv-film-in-pictures

Guess what they say about Vasily Livanov...

They do not like the portrayal of an inflated cult (Holmes) surrounded by deflated mediocre. They value equality in people's worth. At least these days.

9. Ear fishing (честно говоря, затрудняюсь ответить; предположу, что какое-то рыбное блюдо)

http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/may/13/swiss-reject-russian-teacher-putin-foreign-policy

A Russian woman turned down for a teaching post in Switzerland has been told that she was not given the job because of her country's aggressive foreign policy.

The rejection letter from the director of the Issal Institute in the city of Lausanne in western Switzerland read: "Many thanks for your application, but our philosophy will not allow us to employ teachers that come from a country which is provoking a civil war [in Ukraine] and whose president lies and abuses international law. We wish you good luck."

The woman, who has been named only as Svetlana, had applied for a job providing after-school teaching in Russian.

Svetlana, originally from Moscow but now living in the Swiss city of Neuchatel, said that she was shocked by the letter, in particular because the institute's website includes information in Russian.

Speaking to Swiss media, she said: "I don't know anybody I've spoken to who doesn't say it's absurd and intolerable."

Martin Freiburghaus, the director of the teaching institute, said that the decision was made as a sanction against Russia because "Switzerland is officially doing almost nothing".

Do NOT try to diagnose yourself on Wikipedia! 90% of its medical entries are inaccurate, say experts

Problem caused by allowing ordinary users to create, delete and edit pages

Drug companies have been accused of deleting data about side effects

Researchers from Campbell University, US, said medical staff also use site

turning to the internet to determine the cause of your symptoms can be a bad idea, according to a study by doctors.

It found that nine in ten Wikipedia entries on common medical conditions contained factual errors.

This is because, unlike a traditional encyclopedia, the hugely popular website lets ordinary users create, delete and edit entries – increasing the risk of mistakes.

Errors on Wikipedia included an entry which stated that to correctly diagnose high blood pressure, high readings must be obtained on three separate occasions.

The researchers said that is not true and could lead to a dangerous delay in treatment.

Another entry said antidepressants were not beneficial for children.

But according to the researchers, this is incorrect and could prevent parents from allowing their children to be treated with medication.

Drug companies have also been accused of editing Wikipedia to remove references to harmful side effects.

In 2009, employees at AstraZeneca allegedly deleted a sentence claiming that a treatment for manic depression made teenagers ‘more likely to think about harming or killing themselves.’

Worryingly, the researchers said that even medical staff turn to the site from time to time.

Previous studies have shown up to 70 per cent of doctors and students of medicine admit using it as a reference.

The researchers wrote: ‘Physicians and medical students who currently use Wikipedia as a medical reference should be discouraged from doing so because of the potential for errors.’

Are these the most endangered accents of English?

It's not just languages that die off, but dialects too. Here are some of the ones at risk

The way we speak will always be a focus for anxiety. It's because it encodes so much of what is important to us: where we come from, what social class we belong to, who we want to be like. It's not surprising then, that people worry about losing these indicators of identity. As culture becomes increasingly globalised, will the accents that marked communities out as different disappear?

Does modern life mean that all dialects of English will be smoothed over? Not necessarily. People may play up differences that have a useful social meaning. But for varieties kept distinct by remoteness or a way of life that is disappearing, the future looks uncertain. Here are some of the most fascinating:

Tangier

It's isolation that breeds linguistic difference. Just like an animal species on an island, a dialect that has little contact with the outside world will evolve in unpredictable ways and may give rise to forms found nowhere else. It may also hold on to features from earlier stages of the language that have been wiped out elsewhere. This seems to have be the case in Tangier, a remote village in Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. Though it may not be "Elizabethan English" as some claim, it's a reflection of a lifestyle that has changed relatively little in the past few hundred years. With traditional occupations disappearing and more Tangier residents commuting to the mainland, however, it is unlikely to survive for long.

Raed more and listen to the accents at: http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2014/may/27/endangered-accents-english-language

Have you ever heard about The Boring Conference? It is going to be held for the 4th time in late May.

The Boring Conference is a one-day celebration of the mundane, the ordinary, the obvious and the overlooked – subjects often considered trivial and pointless, but when examined more closely reveal themselves to be deeply fascinating.

It was created in response to the cancellation of the 2010 Interesting Conference. It seemed like the obvious thing to do.

Boring IV will be held at Conway Hall on Saturday 31st May 2014.

Doors open at 10am, and things will start to get boring around 10.30am. The event will finish around 5pm, and then you are free to get on with the rest of your lives.

The first 100 tickets will be available at an early bird price of £15, and then after that, they’ll be £20.

This year, 20 speakers will talk about, in 10-minute slots, subjects like domestic inkjet printers of 1999, episodes of the game show You Bet, German film titles, ice-cream-van chimes, how to cook elaborate meals with the equipment found in hotel bedrooms, similarities between 198 of the world's national anthems and the widely disliked font Comic Sans.
