Хорошие упражнения для головы! Учитель должен иметь в своем арсенале что-то подобное....для "разрядки" на уроке, для интересного начала урока, и вообще всегда найдется момент так сказать "блестнуть", заинтересовать детей. ВСЁ скопировала, в ближайшее время употреблю. Спасибо.

А вот еще для разрядки и для отработки ударения в словах:

Вот что мне прислал приятель из США про фразовые глаголы с UP:

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP.'

It's easy to understand: UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car... At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is ordinary, but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP, look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can have UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try building UP a list of the many ways UP is used. It will take UP a lot of your time, but if you don't give UP, you may wind UP with a hundred or more. When it threatens to rain, we say it is clouding UP . But when the sun comes out we say it is clearing UP.

When it rains, it wets the earth and often messes things UP.

When it doesn't rain for awhile, things dry UP.

One could go on and on, but I'll wrap it UP, for now my time is UP, so......it is time to shut UP!

Очень заразительно!

В таких сочетаниях как to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver; we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car...

Тот же американец, который восхищался выражением a lady in full bloom, провел со своими студентами очень серьезную беседу о недопустимости использования слова gay во фразе "we were happy and gay" (заимствование из детского стишка, по-моему, в Старкове:" We were happy and gay on the first of May").

Нашел в одной книге анализ языковых ошибок, сделанных авторами книг об английском языке. Сегодня напишу сами цитаты, содержащие ошибки, а завтра - то, где эти ошибки и кроются. Честно говоря, не знай я, что там есть ошибки, сам бы их сходу не заметил бы. Или этот тот английский автор придирается? А вы нашли их?

Итак, цитаты:

"Prestige is one of the few words that has had an experience opposite to that described in "Worsened words" (H.W. Fowler, A Dictionary of Modern English Usage, second edition).

"The total vocabulary of English is immense and runs to about half a million items. None of us individuals, of course, knows more than a fairly limited number of these, and uses even less..." (Randolph Quirk, The Use of English)

"Each of the variants indicated in boldface type count as an entry" (William and Mary Morris, the Harper Dictionary of Contemporary Usage)

"it is of interest to speculate about the amount of dislocation to the spelling system that would occur if English dictionaries were either proscribed or (as when malory or Sir Philip Sydney were writing) did not exist" (Robert Burchfield, the English Language).

"Prestige is one of the fewest words that has had an experience opposite to that described in "Worsened words" (H.W. Fowler, A Dictionary of Modern English Usage, second edition). - try again ;-)

None of us... uses even less = Nobody uses fewer words than he knows. At least that's what Bill Bryson writes in his comments.

Первая порция ответов 9еще раз повторю, некоторые кажутся мне придирками ;-):

1. "Prestige is one of the few words that has had an experience opposite to that described in "Worsened words" (H.W. Fowler, A Dictionary of Modern English Usage, second edition). - It should be "one of the few words that have had"

2. "The total vocabulary of English is immense and runs to about half a million items. None of us individuals, of course, knows more than a fairly limited number of these, and uses even less..." (Randolph Quirk, The Use of English) - gave the explanation in the previous posting.

3. "Each of the variants indicated in boldface type count as an entry" (William and Mary Morris, the Harper Dictionary of Contemporary Usage) - It should be "each... counts", Harry Smith was perfectly correct on this one ;-)

4. "It is of interest to speculate about the amount of dislocation to the spelling system that would occur if English dictionaries were either proscribed or (as when Malory or Sir Philip Sydney were writing) did not exist" (Robert Burchfield, the English Language). - it should be "was writing"

Еще три подобных цитаты-задачки привести?

Меня немного смущает пример с as when Malory or Sir Philip Sydney were writing. Действительно, если смотреть формально, то or выполняет функцию разделительного союза, но можно сказать, что с помощью этого союза автор добавляет в придаточное предложение второе подлежащее, то есть подлежащим является и Malory, и Sir Philip Sidney. В этом случае можно использовать глагол во множественном числе. Немудрено, что эти ошибки сделаны не просто носителями языка, а авторами книг по лингвистике.

А вот и еще несколько цитат, в которых с точки зрения классической прескриптивной грамматики кроются языковые ошибки.

1. The prevalence of incorrect instances of the use of the apostrophe... together with the abandonment of it by many business firms... suggest that the time is close at hand when this moderately useful device should be abandoned" (Robert Burchfield, The English Language).

2. "His system of citing examples of the best authorities, of indicating etymology, and pronunciation, are still followed by lexicographers" (Philip Howard, The State of the Language).

3. When his fellowship expired he was offered a rectorship at Boxworth... on condition that he married the deceased rector's daughter" (Robert McCrum et al., The STory of English).

"His system of citing examples of the best authorities, of indicating etymology, and pronunciation, is still followed by lexicographers"

Добавлю. В английском языке возможно двоякое согласование нескольких существительных с одним обобщающим существительным. Например, можно сказать Ivan and Maria ARE a loving couple и также правильно будет сказать Ivan and Maria IS a loving couple. В примере о "системах цитирования", слово system определяется словосочетанием of citing examples, что в свою оередь подчиняется словосочетанию of the best authorities и т.д. То есть, здесь вся цепь определений развертывается слева направо и все определения относятся к одному исходному слову SYSTEM. Такая конструкция требует согласования в единственным числе The system IS followed... Вот если бы каждое из определений относилось бы к слову stystem и в предложении фактически говорилось бы о нескольких системах, потребовалось бы согласование во множественном числе The system of... and of ... and of ... ARE followed by ...

Try again. By the way, "deceasing" is hardly ever used in this form, it is normally not an active action verb.
