Dear Rich,

thank you for the attention to the textbook and your remarks. There is definitely a mistake in the statistics figure "200 crimes a year". The reason for that is that the letter comes from a British person expressing his emotions about the treatment of criminals in Britain in his letter to the editor of a local newspaper. The term 'flogging' but not 'caning' also comes from the author. As for the punishment being public or not, it's the most ambiguous issue. Data from Wiki is questioned by some articles, e.g.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/singapore-answers-critics-of-caning-1433176.html,

http://sg.theasianparent.com/singapore-student-to-be-publicly-caned-for-being-late/#

so it's close to impossible to check it. Coming back to the textbook, the main purpoose of placing teh letter on the page was to provke a discussion on the approach to criminals' treatment: humane or harsh. In our textbook we chose to use authentic materials to give it a human touch. We are sorry for the factual mistake the text contains and we are going to correct it in the next edition in the nearest future.

Best regards.

Authors.

Как правильно перевести to be a picture of one s mother u to paint a dark picture.

Уважаемые авторы учебника " New Millennium". В нашей школе ожидается проверка и от учителей требуют контрольные задания в электронном варианте. Где их взять? С уважением. Елена

Контрольные задания можно взять в электронных учебных пособиях - обучающих компьютерных программах.

Dear friends, thank you for the information and for a very serious project that you have uindertaken to do. Such projects certainly require a lot of work!

I have briefly looked through the results and am very impressed by the amount of reserarch you have put into your work.

It would appear that your findings fall into several categories: typos, suggestions on usage of certain words and suggestions on speling variants. Some of the typos may have been corrected in the newer imprints of the textbooks, as we do such corrections every time we print a textbook. I will ask our copy-editors to go over your findings and to compare them with what we have in the latest edition of the textbooks, and if any of the typos are still there in the books, to make the changes.

As for the usage of certain words, it depends on more than one factor. Of course, the most important thing is to make sure that the language sounds natural and is authentic. However, since this is a textbook, there are other factors that influence word choice as well. A lot depends on what rules (including word-building) pupils already know. Also, a lot depends on what needs to be practised in the class and at home. So sometimes we have to write "It teaches them how to be safe on roads" rather than "It teaches road safety" because the word "safety" is not used in the textbook this year, while the word "safe" occurs several times (for example, earlier on on page 117 in ex. 6a -"safe cycling", and then in the project "Have a safe journey!" and further on). Later on in the course, when the pupils know how to form nouns from ajectives, the word "safety" will be used and practised. Still, I will ask our British copy-editors to go over your examples and then we can decide what changes need to be made, if any.

When it comes to choosing a certain variant of spelling, we have to rely on dictionaries. Language change is a very time-consuming process and sometimes there are reverse language changes, when the preferred spelling goes back to the form which was popular years ago. Therefore when editing a textbook (and even more so with a course) we decide on which dictionary we use to check the speling and the transcription. When it comes to ice-skate, interestingly enough the verb is spelled with a hyphen, while the noun is spelled without one - and you rightly suggest such a usage. Therefore we will carefully go over all the examples you have found, compare them with dictionaries and the resourses you have used and them decide on the changes.

I would like to thank your entire team for the enormous work you have done, it will certainly help to make texbooks better.

Yours sincerely,

Alexey Konobeiev, PhD,

Editor-in-Chief,

Titul Publishers

Mr. Konobeiev:

Thank you for your prompt reply.

There are different points of view and considerations out there. We all want to better the textbook. And there are no shortcuts to doing it.

Igor

Some of the mistakes (for lack of a better word) might seem a little far-fetched, it doesn't affect the whole picture. And it would also be interesting to learn about the exact procedure of such an analysis. I mean how exactly the mistakes were identified (e.g. during the lesson, by the students individually or as a group) and so on.

They claim the textbooks are authentic. So, they should be, don't you think? Remember this? "MGIMO finished? Aaask!" We are not authorized to change English. Invented language sounds awkward.

I invested some time in reading the books. Then I showed the girls my draft notes and lexicographer tools. We used Google Apps and one-on-one meetings. They played with the tools and proved I was either right or wrong. Then we discussed our suggestions.

I speak American English and am not good at British English.

We show the trends and link to the tools.

Why trends? Our students are the future. We have to teach them the language of today and tomorrow. Dictionaries are conservative by default.

Why tools? They come in handy when you want to check if your usage is mainstream. It should be neither outdated nor wrong.

And yes, I am a descriptivist, not a prescriptivist.

Being a descreptivist today means that you will perhaps want to focus more on the authentic subjects of communication while the linguistic wrapping has lost its significance in the time of global English. Fewer people care these days about the authenticity of the language be it BE or AE.

Globalization doesn't imply that people are moving around the globe all the time and know all varieties of English. Oftentimes Americans and Brits just don't understand each other. Standard varieties are still there. Say rubber in an American office and feel the difference.

Globalization of English may mean the end of English as a foreign language. I believe we should speak one language in future, probably English, one of its varieties...
