Sometimes you come across certain words or word usage that seems interesting or unusual. Let's share such words so that we all can learn something new.

The word that struck me today was "piddly". I saw it in a comment to an article in a British newspaper, referring to a country which is not really of much importance within the EU. And here's the meaning of the word;

piddly - so small or unimportant as to warrant little or no attention <there's only a piddly difference in price between the two paintings, so take whichever you prefer>

Synonyms chicken, de minimis, footling, inconsequential, inconsiderable, insignificant, measly, Mickey Mouse, minute, niggling, no-account, nominal, paltry, peanut, petty, picayune, piddling, piddly, piffling, pimping, slight, trifling, trivial

Related Words inferior, mean; imperceptible, inappreciable; little, puny, tiny; hairsplitting, nitpicking, pettifogging, quibbling; one-horse, small-fry, two-bit

Near Antonyms serious, substantial, weighty; eventful, momentous, pivotal; conspicuous, noteworthy, outstanding, prominent, remarkable, striking; appreciable, discernible (also discernable), measurable

Antonyms big, consequential, considerable, important, material, significant

This word can also be used as piddling.

Thanks for your posts.It's my turn."A Caucasian man" doesn't actually mean "a man from Caucasus" in American English. It surprisingly stands for "a white person",especially in police reports.(a grammar programme on an English speaking TV channel as a source).

Из многих выражений, приведенных Вами ранее, это - действительно частотное и я не раз встречался с ним. Let one's hair down можно наверное включать в ученический обиход, например, в эссе. Это ведь выражение вполне литературное.

sketchy

someone or something that just isn't right; unsafe

This expression was first coined in reference to hastily drawn out, or sketched, building/construction plans, which were uncertain at best and disastrous at worst. The overall thread of meaning is the same, but now applies to morality/legality. On the overall continuum of goodness, things progress, in order: safe, sketchy, shady, outright criminal.

I can't stop playing online blackjack. I owe thousands of dollars to some very sketchy people.

Glee, season 5, episode 7

I remember how sketchy my first kiss was

Airplanes are sketchy. You are putting your life in the hands of a complete stranger

don't deal with sketchy people. hoes. dumb mfs. you're the company you keep. remember that.

I wanna go to the 2018 world cup if it isn't in a sketchy place like brazil lol
