As Teacher Shortage Grows In Arizona, Districts Look For Ways To Keep Teachers In Classrooms

Kara Dellisanti can describe her first year of teaching in one word: chaos.

“It really is chaos,” she said. “It’s a lot like building the plane while you’re trying to fly it.”

She’s an English teacher at Thunderbird High School in north Phoenix and she’s been teaching for four years now. But the first one wasn’t easy, she said.

To Camille Whiting, who left teaching around the same time Dellisanti started, the first year on the job was “terrible.”

“I’m not even kidding,” she said. “I mean, you feel pretty prepared coming out of school, but rarely do the things you create while you’re in school or while you’re student teaching apply to the actual job you get.”

Whiting taught in public schools for seven years in all. Nationally, nearly half of new teachers don’t make it to five. A statistic, she said, she found to be completely true.

“By the time I left, I was like this unicorn,” she said. “There were a bunch of first- and second-year teachers, and then just several teachers saying I’m hanging on for retirement.”

Why? Whiting can list the reasons. First, she said, there was a lack of funding.

As an English teacher, she said she didn’t have enough books for all of her students and spent several hundred dollars out of her own pocket every year on classroom supplies.

“The biggest one I can remember is paper. They started rationing paper,” she said. “And you literally got to the point where you could make like one page copy per student per week.”

Then there was teaching to standardized testing. She said her students had some of the top test scores in the state, but she felt like a robot.

“It was almost like, ‘This week of the year, you will teach this this way,’” she said.

And, of course, there was the issue of salary. “As time went on, more and more, I thought, ‘Wow, I’m never going to retire,’” she said. “I watched
retirement get cut, I watched benefits get cut, paid leave, you know, all the incentives for any kind of money were just evaporating every year.”

There was also district politics, demanding parents, long hours, and, in the end, Whiting said all of the things she loved about teaching were outweighed.

...At the beginning of this school year, the Arizona School Personnel Administrators Association surveyed 130 school districts and charter schools across Arizona and found that 465 teachers either abandoned or resigned their position within the first month of school. Now, there are more than 8,100 teacher openings needing to be filled this year.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3951122/No-wonder-needs-facelift-Buckingham-Palace-heads-369m-makeover-ROBERT-HARDMAN-reveals-ancient-electrics-leaky-pipes-visiting-VIPs-don-t-ensuite-bathroom.html

No one lays on a welcome quite like the Queen. Even the most exalted world leaders are a little awestruck by a state visit to the United Kingdom – the fairytale carriage procession down the Mall to Buckingham Palace, the attention to detail and the fabulous state banquet in their honour.

Finally, at the end of one of the most extraordinary days of their lives, they retire to the grandest guest room in the Palace, the Orleans Room. At this point, though, they might be a little surprised. Because if they want to use the bathroom, then they need to make a dash down the corridor.

These days, even the lowliest budget hotel will have what it trumpets as ‘en-suite facilities’. But the Queen’s most illustrious guests – from the Emperor and Empress of Japan to the Obamas – have all had to pop across the hallway to clean their teeth.

...But this is a structure which has wiring going back to 1949, when George VI was on the throne and Britain was on rations.

Clandon Park, the great Georgian gem in Surrey, offers a salutary lesson. Last year, it burned to the ground because the National Trust had not replaced an old electrical distribution board. At present, 92 per cent of Palace distribution boards need replacing.

Bits have been falling off the Palace for years, of course. One narrowly missed the Princess Royal not long ago. It is nearly 20 years since 28-year-old Nick Howell from South London was hospitalised after being hit by a large chunk of falling Ballroom plaster while watching his father receive the OBE.

Few people are aware of a very ugly moment at the climax of Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. It was largely overlooked in all the excitement of the huge open-air pop concert in the garden. But hours earlier, a fire broke out in a Palace attic, just underneath the two tons of fireworks sitting on the roof ahead of the big finale.

The entire Palace had to be evacuated for the first time since the Second World War while the fire was put out.

Officials still shudder at the thought of how close they came to a Guy Fawkes moment in the middle of a major royal celebration.

Year after year, there has been an ongoing series of repairs which might best be summed up by the old wartime adage – ‘make do and mend’.

It’s not unusual to find strategically-placed buckets on the top floor to prevent rainwater trickling down to priceless paintings below.

...For now, the rotating programme of rebuilding works is not scheduled to reach her own private apartment until 2025-6, the year she will be sending herself a 100th birthday card.

The overall budget is 13,000 times more than the original purchase price when George III bought Buckingham House as a private family home in 1761.

Some will argue that the Queen should dig in to her own pocket to pay for it all, just as they did in 1992 after Windsor’s state apartments were torched by a neglected builder’s lamp.

But, this time, the monarch should expect a more sympathetic public reaction. First of all, she is not alone. Many of the world’s most famous residences are in trouble. This week, it emerged that Donald Trump may have to wait a year before he moves in to the Oval Office at the White House because of an urgent backlog of maintenance work.

The really big project, however, is the overhaul of another Palace – Westminster. Though it was built long after Buckingham Palace, most of Parliament is in a dire state. From the foundations to the roof, it needs such an extensive overhaul that MPs are likely to be evicted for at least six years during the 2020s.

...Even if the Queen could find £369million (which she couldn’t without selling a lot of national treasures which don’t belong to her), this is not her home. It belongs to the state. The private quarters of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh only account for ten rooms out of a grand total of 775.

Most of the Palace consists of offices, accommodating the 300 administrative staff required to run a head of state of 16 nations. And the rest of it consists of state apartments which, as their name suggests, are used for state hospitality.

Most of those invited here are not world leaders. Rather, they are 90,000 ordinary people attending investitures, receptions and awards ceremonies.

Add the 40,000 people invited to a garden party each year and it starts to look considerably less homely than the official residences of many other world leaders.

All of which helps to explain why the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh were not keen to live here in the first place. It has never really been ‘home’ (unlike Windsor). As a girl, the Queen only moved to the Palace post-Abdication in 1936.

After the outbreak of war three years later, she spent almost all her childhood at Windsor or in Scotland.

As a newly-married couple, Princess Elizabeth and the Duke had just finished converting Clarence House into a family home when she succeeded to the throne.

They were keen to stay put at Clarence House and ‘commute’ to Buckingham Palace. Besides, the recently-widowed Queen Mother was reluctant to move out.

But it was Winston Churchill who forced the issue. He was adamant that monarchs had a duty to live at Buckingham Palace and a royal house-swap duly took place.

Most of the Palace would be instantly recognisable to Queen Victoria today. Down in the kitchens, the chefs are still cooking with copper pans engraved with her ‘VR’ cypher. However, modernisation can be deferred no longer.

Alphabet – Alpha Plus Beta

Alphabet - The first thing that everyone learns. The term alphabet is derived from Greek - Alpha and Beta. The first two letters of Greek becomes the alphabet that covers all the 26 letters in English.

English is the universal language. Besides, it is an official language of all the skies. Regardless of the origin, mother tongue, country of birth, all pilots identify only in English in International airlines.

Rank 3

While English is widely spoken across the globe, ruling the planet, it is ranked only at 3rd place as the most spoken language. The winners and runners are Chinese and surprisingly Spanish!

A Blend of Three Languages

English isn’t a clear and pure language with its own origin. It is derived from and a mix of ancient German, Anglo Norman and Norse. The English we speak today has been modernized in the 14th century.

Owing to the origin, English resembles Dutch, and Flemish.

English Grows every 2 Hours

As we are aware that learning new and interesting words in English improves our vocabulary and knowledge, we may never learn everything in English. Do you know, almost every 2 – 3 hours, a new word is added in English. How interesting!

Grammar Rules

Standard rules for English grammar were laid in 1750s and until then there were no customary rules.

Common words

The two common and most spoken words in English are I and YOU.

Computer friendly language

English may not be the widely spoken language, but the world of technology runs only by this language. Almost more than 90 percent of the data stored in the computers is in English.

Surprising fact

This is quite an amazing fact about English. Around 90 percent of everything that is written in English (Except the typical medical terms) uses only 1000 common words in English.

My exquisitely eccentric childhood with Elizabeth: From blindfold cushion fights to Golden Syrup sandwiches, the charming memoirs of the Queen's close confidante MARGARET RHODES and a joyous journey into a lost world

Buckingham Palace may be London’s most prestigious address, but living there as a guest of the Royal Family during World War II did little for my hopes of romance with the young men I met while out dancing.

When these hopeful gallants offered to escort me home and asked where I lived, they seldom believed me. Even those who accepted that I was telling the truth and accompanied me back to the big house at the top of the Mall had to leave me at the railings, where I still had to get past the soldiers and policemen.

It was my mother who engineered me into the Palace as a lodger and it probably needed little more than a telephone call to her sister, Queen Elizabeth [the future Queen Mother], the aunt who regarded me as her ‘third daughter’.

Born in 1925, less than a year before my cousin Princess Elizabeth, I was virtually brought up with her and Princess Margaret in a world of seemingly unassailable privilege.

...In childhood, the only time I recall Elizabeth pulling rank was when we squabbled over ownership of a wooden seat outside Birkhall’s front door and she claimed it, as a Princess. Later, of course, she knew that she would one day succeed her father, who became King in 1936.

To my eternal shame, on the day the abdication of his brother Edward VIII was announced, I hopped around the room chanting: ‘My Uncle Bertie is going to be King.’

...But, despite the newspapers dubbing her ‘the Queen of the Blitz’, she was greatly disturbed by the bombing. Once she had a meeting at Buckingham Palace with the formidable Lady Reading, the head of the Women’s Voluntary Services, during a particularly bad raid.

They were ensconced by the big windows overlooking the garden and she rather wanted to suggest that they move away in case the glass shattered, but Lady Reading was obviously not the least concerned and just went on talking. Afterwards, my aunt said that she had to strongly remind herself that she was the Queen and couldn’t possibly show any fear.

'It's a culture of functioning drunks': Americans reveal the things that surprised them about Britain when they moved there

Most Americans have seen Harry Potter or Downton Abbey, so they may think that they know all that there is about living in the UK.

But for many who travelled across the pond from the US to set up home there, big surprises awaited them - and they've been airing what raised the eyebrows on an internet forum.

One said he discovered a 'culture of functioning drunks', another 'primitive' laundry services. But there was praise, too - especially for the NHS and the transport system.

As one American ex-pat, Kasey Coff, pointed out: 'There is a huge cultural gap - it is, in every respect, a foreign country.'

The comments were made on forum Quora, which posed the question: 'What is it like to move to England from the States?'

'In London, the following factors usually determine your ability to connect with others - your accent, your secondary school, and your uni,' described one American, Sanford Dickert, living abroad.

He added: 'As many others have said, this is a culture of "functional drunks" - capable of carrying on until 3am in the morning, stumbling home and then waking up for work on Friday, with a slight reduction in performance.'

He described the city as a 'culture centered around pints and pubs'.

British aspects that many people admired included public transportation, the NHS, and a more 'relaxed' office culture.

One of many to comment on public transportation, James Baxley said: 'London has a great transportation system, it can take you anywhere you want in the UK and to major connections in continental Europe.'

Many Quora users commented on the convenience and superiority of the NHS compared with American health care systems.

One user said: 'The NHS. Is fabulous. Once you've got a home address, find your nearest GP and register.'

Volkswagen bosses are told to speak English after company switches its official language to make itself more welcoming

It might be one of Germany’s biggest businesses – but Volkswagen clearly believes British is best. The car giant, which includes Audi, has announced it is switching its official language to English in a bid to be more welcoming. Bosses say the move is designed to improve recruitment as some prospective employees are put off by the need to understand their home nation’s language.

In future, English is to be the group language,' board member Dr Karlheinz Blessing said. 'This will improve access to the top management level for international top performers and cooperation among top managers. 'As a globally positioned group, we need the best people in the world.'

VW owns a wide range of foreign brands including British marque Bentley, France’s Bugatti and Skoda in the Czech Republic. The policy change means English will be the official language used by top managers for documents, meetings and presentations.

Factory staff will still be free to speak their own country’s language amongst themselves.
