Robert Louis Stevenson Bed in Summer In winter I get up at night And dress by yellow candle-light. In summer quite the other way, I have to go to bed by day. I have to go to bed and see The birds still hopping on the tree, Or hear the grown-up people’s feet Still going past me in the street. And does it not seem hard to you, When all the sky is clear and blue, And I should like so much to play, To have to go to bed by day? November By Thomas Hood (1844) No sun - no moon! No morn - no noon - No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease, No comfortable feel in any member - No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! - November! Girls and Boys By S. Baring Gould Girls and boys, come out to play! The moon shines as bright as day. Leave your supper and leave your sleep And join your playfellows down the street. Come with a whoop and come with a ball, Come with a good will or not to come at all, Up the ladder and down the wall, Half penny loaf shall feed us all. Unreal Conditional: "It Might Have Been" by Ella Wheeler Wilcox We will be what we could be. Do not say, "It might have been, had not this, or that, or this." No fate can keep us from the chosen way; He only might who is. We will do what we could do. Do not dream Chance leaves a hero, all uncrowned to grieve. I hold, all men are greatly what they seem; He does, who could achieve. We will climb where we could climb. Tell me not Of adverse storms that kept thee from the height. What eagle ever missed the peak he sought? He always climbs who might. I do not like the phrase "It might have been!" It lacks force, and life's best truths perverts: For I believe we have, and reach, and win, Whatever our deserts.

2009 Robert Herric (1591-1674) Cherry-Ripe Cherry-ripe, ripe, ripe. I cry, Full and fair ones; come and buy, If so be you ask me where They do grow, I answer: There Where my Julia's lips do smile; There's the land, or cherry-isle, All the year where cherries grow. George Grabbe (1754-1832) His Mother's Wedding Ring The ring so worn, as you behold, So thin, so pale, is yet of gold: the passion such it was to prove; Worn with life's cares, love yet was love. The Question Song What did you watch? Where did you play? What do you listen to yesterday? Where did you walk? Who did you phone? What did you do when you arrived home? I watched TV, I played my guitar, I listened to my favourite singing star. I walked to school, I phoned my friend, I finished all my homework in the end. I didn`t watch a film, I didn`t play a ball, And I didn`t listen to anything at all. I didn`t walk here and I didn`t phone there, I stayed at home and I washed my hair!

An Ode Two the Spelling Chequer Prays the Lord for the spelling chequer That came with our pea sea! Mecca mistake and it puts you rite Its so easy to ewes, you sea. I never used to no, was it e before eye? (Four sometimes its eye before e.) But now I've discovered the quay to success It's as simple as won, too, free! Sew watt if you lose a letter or too, The whirled won't come two an end! Can't you sea? It's as plane as the knows on yore face S. Chequer's my very best friend I've always had trubble with letters that double "Is it one or to S's?" Dearest creature in creation, Study English pronunciation. I will teach you in my verse Sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse. I will keep you, Suzy, busy, Make your head with heat grow dizzy. Tear in eye, your dress will tear. So shall I! Oh hear my prayer. Just compare heart, beard, and heard, Dies and diet, lord and word, Sword and sward, retain and Britain. (Mind the latter, how it's written.) Now I surely will not plague you With such words as plaque and ague. But be careful how you speak: Say break and steak, but bleak and streak; Cloven, oven, how and low, Script, receipt, show, poem, and toe. Hear me say, devoid of trickery, Daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore, Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles, Exiles, similes, and reviles; Scholar, vicar, and cigar, Solar, mica, war and far; One, anemone, Balmoral, Kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel; Gertrude, German, wind and mind, Scene, Melpomene, mankind. Billet does not rhyme with ballet, Bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.Blood and flood are not like food, Nor is mould like should and would. Viscous, viscount, load and broad, Toward, to forward, to reward. And your pronunciation's OK When you correctly say croquet, Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve, Friend and fiend, alive and live. Ivy, privy, famous; clamour And enamour rhyme with hammer. River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb, Doll and roll and some and home. Stranger does not rhyme with anger, Neither does devour with clangour. Souls but foul, haunt but aunt, Font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant, Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger, And then singer, ginger, linger, Real, zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and gauge, Marriage, foliage, mirage, and age. Query does not rhyme with very, Nor does fury sound like bury. Dost, lost, post and doth, cloth, loth. Job, nob, bosom, transom, oath. Though the differences seem little, We say actual but victual. Refer does not rhyme with deafer. Foeffer does, and zephyr, heifer. Mint, pint, senate and sedate; Dull, bull, and George ate late. Scenic, Arabic, Pacific, Science, conscience, scientific. Liberty, library, heave and heaven, Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven. We say hallowed, but allowed, People, leopard, towed, but vowed. Mark the differences, moreover, Between mover, cover, clover; Leeches, breeches, wise, precise, Chalice, but police and lice; Camel, constable, unstable, Principle, disciple, label. Petal, panel, and canal, Wait, surprise, plait, promise, pal. Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair, Senator, spectator, mayor. Tour, but our and succour, four. Gas, alas, and Arkansas. Sea, idea, Korea, area, Psalm, Maria, but malaria. Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean. Doctrine, turpentine, marine. Compare alien with Italian, Dandelion and battalion. Sally with ally, yea, ye, Eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key. Say aver, but ever, fever, Neither, leisure, skein, deceiver. Heron, granary, canary. Crevice and device and aerie. Face, but preface, not efface. Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass. Large, but target, gin, give, verging, Ought, out, joust and scour, scourging. Ear, but earn and wear and tear Do not rhyme with here but ere. Seven is right, but so is even, Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen, Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk, Ask, grasp, wasp, and cork and work. Pronunciation -- think of Psyche! Is a paling stout and spikey? Won't it make you lose your wits, Writing groats and saying grits? It's a dark abyss or tunnel: Strewn with stones, stowed, solace, gunwale, Islington and Isle of Wight, Housewife, verdict and indict. Finally, which rhymes with enough - Though, through, plough, or dough, or cough? Hiccough has the sound of cup. My advice is to give up!!! O, will you come? Will you come? Will you come if the night has a moon full or bright? O, will you come? Would you come? Would you come if the noon gave light, not the moon? Beautiful, would you come? Would you have come? Would you have come without scorning, had it been still morning? Beloved, would you have come? If you come, Haste and come. elkaJUNE 2011 April is here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQnyV2YWsto&feature=player_embedded#at=12 Daffodils (by William Wordsworth) I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze. Continuous as the stars that shine And twinkle on the milky way, They stretched in never-ending line Along the margin of a bay: Ten thousand saw I at a glance, Tossing their heads in sprightly dance. The waves beside them danced, but they Out-did the sparkling leaves in glee; A poet could not be but gay, In such a jocund company! I gazed—and gazed—but little thought What wealth the show to me had brought: For oft, when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood, They flash upon that inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude; And then my heart with pleasure fills, And dances with the daffodils. Twilight by G.G. Byron It is thehour when from the boughs Thenightingale's high note is heard; It is thehour — when lover's vows Seem sweetin every whisper'd word; And gentlewinds and waters near, Make musicto the lonely ear. Each flowerthe dews have lightly wet, And in thesky the stars are met, And on thewave is deeper blue, And on theleaf a browner hue, And in theHeaven that clear obscure So softlydark, and darkly pure, Thatfollows the decline of day As twilightmelts beneath the moon away. IF If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you, If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don't deal in lies, Or being hated, don't give way to hating, And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream -- and not make dreams your master; If you can think -- and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same. If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds' worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it, And -- which is more -- you'll be a Man, my son! Swish-swash! Swish-swash! Two and two now. See them dash! One, two, one, two, Round they scamper, safely through, Swish-swash! such merry skipping, One, two – some one is tripping! Ah, she’s out now and must pay Turning rope while others play! See the bobbing golden curls, Little skirts in rhythmic swirls Rising, falling, to the beat Of the little skipping feet! When these pretty sights appear, It is surely very clear April’s here!
